WinSuricata @ WinSnort.com Introduces New Centralized Host and Remote Node Deployment Architecture

WinSuricata @ WinSnort.com has introduced a new centralized deployment architecture built around EveBox, OpenSearch, and OpenSSL, providing a structured way to extend individual Suricata sensors into a centralized security monitoring environment. The new EveBox + OpenSearch + OpenSSL Host Edition is designed as an add-on to an existing WinSuricata Headless sensor and provides centralized event storage, search, alert management, visualization, TLS/PKI infrastructure, and sensor management. Local Suricata telemetry continues to be generated through the standard EVE JSON event stream, while EveBox and OpenSearch provide the centralized platform for analyzing and managing that telemetry.

The new Host installation also introduces an integrated PKI and security framework for the WinSuricata environment. The Host automatically establishes the required OpenSSL Root CA, TLS certificates, private keys, and OpenSearch security configuration, while providing validation and recovery capabilities through the WinSuricata OpenSearch PKI Checker. This allows the Host to serve not only as a centralized EveBox/OpenSearch platform, but also as the trusted control point for authenticated sensor communications. The architecture is designed to preserve the underlying Suricata installation while adding centralized storage, visualization, security, and management capabilities around it.

Alongside the new Host deployment, WinSuricata is introducing the EveBox Remote Node Agent — OpenSearch Edition, a completely new deployment component designed specifically for distributed Suricata sensors. A Remote Node continues to operate as a full local WinSuricata/Suricata sensor, including packet capture, detection, rule processing, and local EVE JSON generation. The new EveBox Remote Agent operates alongside Suricata and securely forwards applicable alert telemetry to a designated WinSuricata Host. Each Remote Node is individually registered with the Host and receives a unique Host-generated authentication and configuration package, establishing an authorized communication relationship between that sensor and the centralized environment.

This new architecture allows multiple WinSuricata sensors to participate in a centralized EveBox/OpenSearch deployment while retaining local Suricata processing at each sensor. A typical deployment can therefore consist of a WinSuricata Headless sensor as the core detection layer, a Host providing centralized EveBox/OpenSearch services and PKI, and one or more Remote Nodes forwarding authenticated telemetry to that Host. Work is continuing on additional deployment options, management features, and future enhancements as the WinSuricata platform develops. We invite you to visit WinSnort.com, try the new Host and Remote Node deployments, and share your experience and feedback. Feedback, suggestions, and real-world testing are greatly appreciated and will help guide future enhancements and improvements to the WinSuricata deployment framework.

New Enterprise Feature: Nodes Restore

We’ve added a new Nodes Restore option to WinSuricata Enterprise Host Manager.

Following a Host disaster recovery, reset, or rebuild, the Host security key changes, causing all connected Remote Nodes to lose their connection to the Host. Previously, each Node would have to be manually reconnected, which was time consuming.

Nodes Restore eliminates that process. Using the Host’s existing Nodes backup, all previously registered Remote Nodes can be restored and reconnected to the recovered Host automatically.

Whether you have 1 Node or hundreds of Nodes, the recovery process takes approximately one minute to restore the Node registrations and begin reconnecting the Remote Nodes.

This feature was added following a real-world request from a user who had to manually reconnect 7 Remote Nodes after a Host recovery. What is manageable with seven Nodes can become a significant task with dozens or hundreds.

Nodes Restore makes large-scale Host disaster recovery significantly faster and easier.
